if there is a chance to put this big deal back together that he and speaker boehner were very close to having this deal last week, that in many ways this speech was almost a post-mortem, almost setting up the blame game for the fact that no big deal is going to happen and no matter what happens here at the end of the day the debt ceiling is probably going to go up, nobody is going to be happy about the deal. i can tell you this, ann, i had a bunch of democrats who said to me would have been a good speech to give two weeks ago. >> i know that he calls republican activism, so much so that we hear capitol hill websites were crashing last night because so many people were trying to e-mail representatives. it sounds like he spooked main street. will he also speak wall street? >> no, wall street is calm. the markets are looking good today. we had a blip down in the indicators from 9:05 and 9:20, then i came right back. nobody is buying the panic or skyrocketing interest rates scenario. >> that said, hedge funds are prepare for a default. >> there's a possibility that we could default. it will be short term.

sticking point is this issue of raising the debt limit, large enough, big enough, so that it gets us through 2012, gets us into the spring of 2013. right now, of course, the boehner bill and what republicans were supporting would have this debt limit come to another vote in the next -- >> at this point in time -- >> harry reid wants to do is simply figure out a way to satisfy the second round of deficit reduction, create a stronger trigger potentially, whatever he can come to, to get more republicans to support his way in order to get this debt limit passed 2012. i think he's going to come to an agreement. the question is, how big of an agreement is it? is it an agreement that barely gets the eight republicans he wants? or does it get 20 republicans and sends a strong, bipartisan message to make sure this thing doesn't get gummed up again in the house. >> does he have a dance partner in terms of a republican willing to negotiate? >> reporter: he's got a few dance partners potentially, but right now he's not working very well with mitch mcconnell. that's not clear. but don't be surpri

and even a tad relief for some people, doug. >> you know what? more than a tad, wendy. i would say big-time relief for a lot of us out there right now, as we did have some storms roll through. and one of those storms in particular was so strong, it put out a boundary that really helped to cool everybody down. right now on doppler radar, you can see really only one storm around our area. a few storms back towards west virginia, the one in our location right now is right around prince william county around the brentsville region. but notice how it has cooled things down. 94 right now instead of 102 just a couple hours ago. the heat index? down from 121 to 100. we can deal with 100. we dealt with it before. current temperatures out there right now, you can see where the storms were, and where that boundary came through. 88 right now in leesburg. 88 in gaithersburg, but 100 in l plata and culpeper at 102. that's where we're dealing with the very high heat endetection readings. 121 in la plata. 123 in fredericksburg, but into the 90s, so very good news there. we're going continue to see nic

hellie joins us live with today's developments. no big surprise here, dan. >> reporter: no. we knew that donovan mcnabb was on his way out, and he is heading to the minnesota vikings, the redskins able to salvage something out of this deal. it's not totally finalized just yet. the redskins have worked out a trade with the vikings that would bring them a sixth round pick and conditional sixth round pick as well. the final hurdle, though, is going to be mcnabb's contract. minnesota needs him to rework that deal, because he's due a $10 million bonus in about a month. and mcnabb will have a chance to start in minnesota, where the only other quarterback they have right now is christian ponder, a first-round draft pick out of florida state. so this could be a good situation and perhaps a chance for donovan mcnabb to resurrect his career. >>> all right. now to the signings, and there have been several, especially at wide receiver. brandon stokley within the hour just signed by the skins or actually coming to terms on a deal, because they can't officially sign until friday. he was in seattl

is expected to last throughout the week. >> a big search took place this evening, a search for a dog that survived a car accident that killed one of its owners. for the family of the woman who died, the search for cricket gave them some hope to hold on into in this time of grief and darcy spencer is here with good news from hay market, virginia. >> just a little more than an hour ago the missing dog named cricket was captured. i'm told she's alive and in perfect condition. a woman driving by the area saw cricket sitting on the side of the road, pulled over and held the dog until family members arrived. everyone i spoke to is very pleased to have a happy end being to this very tragic story. cricket is a 3-year-old great pyrenees riding in a crate with her owners last sunday afternoon when they crashed head-on into a pin payingo. jack survived and his wife charlotte did not. the dog escaped from her crate and had been missing ever since. the crash happened around 4:30 near shady oak lane near hay market. today a tracking dog named heidi came to the area where she had been seen. late th

of the other spots where you can jump on the parkway. it's been a big inconvenience for folks. keep in mind, though, this is a very small window of time they're going to do this. from 7:00 a.m. until 9:15, that's when they're going to reopen the southbound lanes of cathedral. after 9:15, they're going to close it back down and run the traffic the rest of the day just in the northbound direction. so basically, they're providing you some relief but only during the morning rush hour. hopefully, that's going to help a lot of folks out. they're going to get on southbound rock creek parkway. you're going to have to get at it. 9:15 is when they're going to turn it around and make it northbound again. it's been a tough go for folks in this area. not a lost places to jump on the parkway. hopefully, this is going to help people out. eun, back to you. >> megan mcgrath. megan, thank you. >>> elderly drivers are often teased for driving too slowly, but a new study out this morning shows your kids may be safer riding with their grandparents than they are with you. the study looked at car crash claims in
